Don't Get Caught Up in the Social Media Marketing Hype - Desk of Katina Davenport

I turned off my Periscope app and significantly scaled back from watching and broadcasting. Why? I will explain shortly. First, I want to share with you about how I was introduced to this app.

I first heard about this app from my coach. She demonstrated how to use it, what to say, and what not to say. We had a brief tutorial on how to use Periscope in our mastermind group. Right away I wanted to be a broadcaster. My goal was to inspire and teach the world. As I started broadcasting, I noticed the desire to do it more frequently. For two weeks I scoped everyday and posted my links to all the Periscope support groups on Facebook. Then, I looked at my schedule. Periscope wasn’t in line with my goals for blogging or my family. Truthfully, I should have been doing more work and less talking. It was wearing me out.

Like so many others, I got caught up in the latest thing in social media marketing. I often find myself getting caught up in the latest avenues to reach my audience only to realize that I must stick to the marketing schedule I already created. Although it is imperative for me to gain exposure, it is also imperative that I not become overwhelmed.

Social Media Marketing Mindfulness

I wanted to share with you about being mindful when marketing online. It is so easy to become enamored with sales headlines promising to answer all of the problems in your business if you opt-in to this one email and get a free e-Book. It is too easy to become an email addict. Here is what I want you to consider. When you encounter someone on Periscope offering great, valuable information take it and prove it for yourself. The reason I said to do that is because there will be someone who will come along and contradict the information you have received.

For example, I heard a broadcaster say that you do not need to have a business plan for your business because you are not physic (I am just paraphrasing). I stopped listening to this particular person because i know that new business owners should have a business plan if they plan on getting a loan some time in the future. Also, it is beneficial to create one in order to have an outline of how the business will run.

Defeating Overwhelm in your business

This post is really about defeating overwhelm in your business. Quite frankly, wanting to succeed in your endeavors can be overwhelming enough, without the added pressure of following advice that takes you away from your original plan.

Together, lets make a commitment to create a marketing plan that is tailored to our needs. We don’t have to be everywhere online at once. Stick to the social media platforms that work well for your business. If you need to re-evaluate your plans, do it because you want to, not because someone else suggests you do something different. Lastly, when you find someone that can assist with your social media plans, or their message resonates with you, then invest in them. By investing in them you are investing in yourself by purchasing their book, course, or coaching program.

I decided that, in order to be successful I had to stick with my plan. My plans could not change with every new program or every piece of social media marketing advice. I know which social media platforms work well for me. I just need to stick with what I know what works best.
